So I just finished testing out the Samsung DEX dock that is compatible with Samsung’s Galaxy S8 series smartphone. The DEX actually transforms the Samsung S8 and S8+ from a smartphone to a fully functioning workstation.
The DEX is a compact little accessory that comes with a USB type-C port in the lower center of the dock that the Samsung S8+ plugs into. When the dock is not in use the back plane of the dock can slide over the dock itself with the help of a mini spring mechanism, this covering the port to keep it free from dust and debris.
The back of the Samsung DEX has a series of standard interfaces such as an HDMI out port for connection to a monitor or large screen TV. There are also two (2) available USB ports as well as an USB Type C charging and data port.
The Samsung DEX does not come with a power supply because the power supply that comes with the Samsung 8 or 8+ phone is designed to be used with the dock instead.
Hooking up all of your favorite peripherals such as wireless keyboards, mice, game pads etc are straight forward and there is also no need to install any drivers manually. Simply plug and play.
Once hooked up to an external monitor you are greeted with the the Samsung DEX logo and then your screen turns into workstation layout with a similar look and feel to a Windows 7 desktop experience.
In the lower left hand side of the screen you can see all of your applications that are currently running. The lower right hand side of the screen gives you access to all of your phone settings and stuff. There are also desktop icons that give you easy access to things like your media, emails and commonly accessed applications.
